Signs

These pictures of hand-painted/hand-crafted signs made me feel like I did when I first read Chris Ware's Jimmy Corrigan - heartbroken and nostalgic for a past that lives only in someone else's imagination.

Those signs are kinda cool. But I also think that there's a lot of cool stuff out there now, too. Ever look at the "art" at the Starbucks? I always wondered how they got the chalkboards to look nice-- I mean, there can't be an artist on staff at every Starbuck's, right? Well, they have a "district" artist whose job it is to go around and do those "chalkboard art" signs. That's kinda cool, man. It's not a "template" or faux chalk sticker (both things I thought it might be at first). So just like the way birds, who lose tree habitats in the city, will perch on everything from electric wires to statues, instead, making a new kind of habitat (not a better one) artists adapt and learn new industry. (I know, that sounds really optimistic.) But still.
